Pholas Dactylus has been one of the most interesting bands of 70’s progressive Italian scene. Their only album, Concerto delle menti (Concert of the minds), was issued in 1973 on Vittorio De Scalzi’s Magma Studio Recording. Concerto delle menti is not the usual disc of rock progressive, is a musical journey through different styles with an experimental approach of great fascination that just for this turns out to be really original and unique in the large Italian Progressive era. This is a 50 minutes suite, divided on two sides, with a great poetical lyrics and theatrical feeling which evolves in something really new. Paolo Carelli declaims back of apocalyptic feeling with his hypnotic voice, instrumental parts vary between hard progressive to modern electric jazz to psychedelia. King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Magma echoes making this album a bridge between progressive and vanguard. A must have.
