HEAD WEST - S/T
[LP]    LABEL: WITA
21.00EUR

First re edition of Head West album since 1971 ! Head West, a trio as explosive as it was short-lived, recorded in 1970 a digest of soul, funk and psychedelic rock, a la Sly Stone, which was recycled 30 years later by numerous samplers, including Gorillaz, Jon Spencer, David Holmes & bobby gilespie/ Primal Scream... On the occasion of Record Store Day, Wita records unearths a forgotten or unknown musical nugget, a rarity sought after by a few collectors or diggers in search of original sounds to sample. Head West, a trio as explosive as it was short-lived, brilliantly recorded this fantastic blend of soul, funk and psychedelic rock, characteristic of the late 1960s, a musical fusion in which Sly and the Family Stone were the masters. The record is remarkable for the quality of the production, for the magnificent soulful vocal harmonies, supported by the wild roar of Robert Hunts Hammond organ. But it was certainly Henry Moores heavy breakbeats and solid grooves that, 25 to 30 years later, with the advent of sampling, gave this album a second life. Many artists and producers have recycled the drum parts with their formidable sound and efficiency. They can be found on the track New Genious, from the Gorillaz first album, Calvin on Acme by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the song by David Holmes and Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream, Slip Your Skin on Bow Down To the Exit Sign, but also by UNKLE, Kid Koala, Dining Room or more recently Tyler the Creator, Mac Miller, Aesop Rock, Logic... Head West was born from the ashes of the Los Angeles soul band, the Seven Souls. Henry Moore & Bob Welch teamed up with organist Robert Hunt from the Merced Blues Notes to record this one and only record and a few singles. Bob Welch was to become more famous shortly afterwards as part of Fleetwood Mac. Recorded in France in 1970 for Vogue records, these tracks are also a French production: Starchild Music who will produce the album of the Canadian combo Cane and Able.
